Desktop Won't Finish Loading - Icon & Taskbar Flash

I am running Windows XP Home, and everything was working
fine until I downloaded the XP Service Pack 1. I don't
know if this screwed it up or not, but I forgot to
disable my firewall & anti-virus software during the
download. Anyway, after the download, every other time I
would go in my XP User Account, the desktop icons &
taskbar would flash on & off, like the desktop couldn't
finish loading. Every time I would go in one of the
other User Accounts I have set up, it would do the same
thing. I uninstalled the Service Pack, and the system
seemed to work for about a day. Then it started doing
the same thing again. I turned off the firewall &
antivirus software & downloaded the Service Pack again.
The desktop still won't load properly. Now my User
Account loads OK sometimes, but the others won't load at
all. I figured out that CTRL-ALT-DEL would bring up Task
Manager while the icons and Task Bar are flashing. I can
then hit Shutdown and then either shut the computer down
or hit Restart. The other problem I noticed with all of
this is that when I am able to run my User Account
(usually every other time I reboot or start with
the computer off), if I try to LOg Off, it will start to
close, but then it gets to the blue "saving your
settings" screen & it hangs up - nothing else happens &
the only way to get out of it is to turn off the computer
power switch. Finally (I think), the screen saver never
comes on now. If I am in my User Account and leave the
computer alone for a while, the icons & Task Bar
disappear, but the Wallpaper is still showing. It hangs
up once it reaches that point. I really appreciate any
help or advice on how to fix this, and I really need step-
by-step instructions. Thank you!
Curt

I am have similar problem - looking for a permanent fix. Short term, especially when in list of files in a folder, right click in an open area and click on refresh. This stops it while you are in that folder.
