desktop vs. scrfeen size

XP has been running 2 years on a Dell Inspirion 8100.
Recently, the desktop has been displayed smaller than
screen size. If I go to maximum resolution, the desktop
fills the screen but, naturally, everything is very small.

I used to be able to reduce resolution without shrinking
the desktop. By doing so, I increased the size of
everything displayed.

How can I get back to using all of the screen regardless
of the resolution set through Control Panel/Display?
