I'm using XP home and the desktop shorcuts to user files
have stopped working. Shortcuts to applications are OK.

Any chance the files got moved or placed in a new folder ? Check Properties
for the problem shortcuts to see if destination is correct in Target line.
If not, there is a "Find target" button in lower-left corner of the
Properties dialog box.

Thanks Malv, but that's not it. when you click on a
shortcut to a user file, Windows shows the "busy"
hourglass for about 45 seconds then the screen goes
blank. When it comes back Windows is done with its task
but the requested file is not opened.

Turns out the problem was solved by cleaning the system
with spybot. Apparently some of the pop-up junk files
were interfering with Windows operations.

Thanks for your help
