desktop shortcut to file not working

I installed Excel 2007 (part of Office for Student and Home) on my computer, but left my old Office
2003 in tack.
Now I can not get any desktop shortcut to frequent files to work in either version of Excel.

If I change the file association to the old Excel, I get 8 warning messages about unable to find
"document.xls", "myname.xls" and other before the actual file will open.

If I change the file association to the new Excel, I get a blank page that I have to click on twice
to get the file to open.

I can open either version of Excel and then FILE-Open and get the file, but I want the desktop icon
to work.

Any help before I uninstall Office 2007 and shove it up where the light don't shine?

I'd try reregistering xl2003:

Close excel (all versions)
windows start button|Run
type your path to excel2003:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\excel.exe" /unregserver
and hit enter
then
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\excel.exe" /regserver
and hit enter.

The last version installed or registered should be the default program.

I don't use xl2007 enough to help, but I think I've read posts that complain
about the same thing.
