desktop shortcut icons

my shortcuts on my desktop no longer function. i have
several excel spreadsheets that i keep on my desktop and
when i double click them, excel will launch but my file
will not open. i have to manually open it. did i somehow
lose the file association for the shortcuts? any help
will be greatly appreciated.
