Desktop settings and icons disappeared

All the icons and start menu bar disappeared on its own.
All I get is the background screen with nothing on it. I
could go to task manger by pressing ctrl-alt-del. I could
access all my desktop settings and icons in safemode. How
can I get back my desktop settings back in normal mode.

Right click on your desktop and go to arrange icons and
on the service that says Show Desktop icons at the bottom
of the list - make sure there is a checkmark. If there
is not a checkmark click on it to turn it on.

The mouse does NOT work on the desktop in this situation . there are
remedies posted in the past couple of days including the one I found to
