desktop problem

Hi.

I have the following problem: When I start XP there are no icons nor start menu on the desktop... just the background... later I figured out it's an explorer.exe problem becouse when I open Task Manager and end explorer.exe process, and than go to New Task, type in explorer... everything appears... what could be the problem?... how do I fix it?
