Desktop operating from server???

I enjoy the physical layout provided by the Deskop view of
files and folders, but do not like the vulnerability
should my desktop PC crash.

Is it possible to have a desktop view of files and folders
that are stored in a directory found on a server?

If this is possible I would enjoy the layout and the
security provided by admin control of backups to the
server....

Any advice apreciated.
