Desktop not loading upon start up

T

Tinker

Greetings all.

Posting this in hopes that I can get assistance for a
problem I've encountered. As of last night, upon boot up,
my desktop and start menu will not load up. I'll try
explaining what happened, so you can all understand whats
going on.

My computer ran fine up until last night when I tried
accessing a program called "HP Financial Calculator". I
have a suspicion that it might have been a cleverly
placed virus program, as upon accessing it my computer
began to run at choppy speeds almost as if something was
cluttering it up in memory. Also, I began recieving error
messages about how an "unwise.exe" couldn't run properly.

I restarted the computer, thinking the program might have
had an error loading up, and that was what was causing
the choppiness. That was when my problem began, as I
found that the start menu and my desktop icons wouldn't
load up. When I hit ctrl-alt-del to access the task
manager, I saw that "unwise.exe" was in it. Thinking it
might have been the cause of the problem, I first tried
to delete the file manueally, but it wouldn;t let me. So
rather than deleting it, I renamed it so that windows
couldn't load it. I restarted, and my desktop and icons
loaded up. However, NOW I can't run any programs aside
from Internet Explorer and my internet connection
shortcut (Which is how I'm typing this message here).

I changed unwise.exe back to normal, and I could use
programs again. However, upon reboot, my start-up menu
and desktop icons once again vanish. I've attempted
running my Norton Anti-Virus program, but it shuts down
almost immediatly upon accessing it.

Given that this is something that seems to have to do
with Windows, I thought it appropriate that I seek help
here. I would deeply appreciate any thoughts any of you
might have, or any other services that I should consider
contacting.

Thanks!

Unwise.exe is typically what many software vendors name the uninstall
programs for their software. If you can not run Norton from your computer
I recommend running it from their site. Have you also tried doing a system
restore to an earlier time and then running the antivirus.
Is the HP Financial calculator installed on your computer and can you find
it in add/remove section? If so have you tried to uninstall it?

Hi,

Remove unwise from both the run key and run once keys:

Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
