desktop is gone

I ran a program (RegRun) to help me improve my startup and
now I don't have any desktop anymore. Just a blue screen
(or whatever background I want). Which program runs the
desktop, so I can replace it. Restore doesn't restore it
and Norton auto-protect doesn't work but I can get to
everything else through the task manager and everything
else seems to work fine, except I can't find the control
panel.

I've checked the startup in msconfig and everthing there
seems to be the same as it was before

The startup is very fast now.

Thanks

Try running explorer.exe

Then I'd suggest un-doing what the regrun did, hopefully it kept an undo
file in case a problem like this occured.

Right-click the desktop, choose properties to see Display.

I don't know where you're looking for control panel, but you could try
RUN, then type into the box
control

If you can't get control panel, that's decidedly problemsome.

Kelly has two fixes that I can seefor the CP, one at line 224 to
display the CP on the start menu and the other at line 256 to restore
the CP.

OR things might come together if you use RUN, then cmd to get a
command box. This command checks your system files.
sfc /scannow (note the space between sfc and / )
The startup is very fast now.

Oops! there is no desktop, e.g. no right click. But I
found the control panel in windows/system32

I thought you had something, just not the desktop you expected to find
when you began your adventures in software. Big expanse of blue space,
unwrit.

If you can get into Control Panel, it has the same Display area as the
desktop as was.

System Restore *ought* to put things back as before - run from Task
Manager File - New task and run
C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

(you have to give the whole path like that - modifying it should
windows not be in C:\Windows)

The desktop is explorer.exe - you can run that from Task manager too,
not needing the whole path. It should be set in the registry at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
as the value for Shell in the right pane
