desktop image problems

For some reason, all of a sudden, when I try to set an
image (.jpg or .gif) as my desktop background it shows up
if I set it to "tile" or "stretch" but if I set it
to "center" it doesn't show up at all. Does anybody know
what's wrong or how to fix it?
