desktop icons

im having a problem with shortcuts on my desktop the error message reads:
windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. u may not have the
appropriate permissions to access this item. however by placing the item in
a folder you may then access the item. also the items can be acessed from
start menu. i was wondering what can be done about this if anything? any help
would be greatly appreciated thanx for your time.
 
Hi,

Your .lnk file association may be damaged. Go to www.dougknox.com, click on
WinXP Fixes, then on File Association fixes, download the .lnk fix and run
it on your machine.
