desktop icons

My desktop icons and start menu do not load at boot-up.
I can get to the programs through the task manager but
this is cumbersome. Any thoughts our help would be
appreciated.

Had upgrade from 98se to XP Pro and had same problem. All
solutions mentioned here in other posts did not work. I
went to Bios and disabled on board video as per MS
Bulletin and used strictly my PCI video. Re-formated
drive, re-installed XP and downloaded ONLY the CRITICAL
updates and a limited number of the extras. Something
from the Extra stuff was crashing my system. Could bring
up Task manger and it showed that Explorer was running.
Closed Explorer and reopened and it came back to life..
Until I rebooted. System now working great. (well, for the
past 24 hours at least) Time will tell.
