desktop icons missing

Ivan

I have windows vista and I have some shortcuts on the desktop that show the
symbol of "what program runs this" on it. Plus I can see the actual icon
under that. I have tried going and changing the icon, but it won't work.
The shortcuts work, but I want to see the picture not the ugly symbol.
Anyone know how to fix that?

Have you tried refreshing the desktop by press F5 on your keyboard? Could
you give us a more specific description of the symbol? Is it a Windows file
icon over your application icons?

You can also give this a try:
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories and right-click
on the Command Prompt and choose "Run as administrator".
Type in: SFC /SCANNOW and press your Enter key.

F5 did not work. Also, I am not sure what doing the scan was for. IT found
problems in the CBS Log. But that means nothing to me.

None of that worked. The icon that shows in the one you see when you place a
document on your desktop, but there is no program to run it. So I am not
sure how to get rid of that.
