Desktop icons have disappeared

It seems as if my friends think I know everything about a computer and
Windows XP since I was able to help them with one or two problems, but that
is a bad assumption. LOL So I am coming to you for help again.

Why would all of the desktop icons disappear? When she asked me, she said
her 'desktop disappeared' so I took that to mean all of the icons.

Right click a blank spot on the desktop.
Move the pointer to Arrange Icons by
Make sure "Show desktop icons" is checked.
