desktop icons dont display

when our laptop is turned on, only the welcome screen displays. A few
seconds later, the wallpaper apprears. Nothing else. No icons..nothing. Cant
right click anything. If I use alt_cntl del to get Task Manager only the
"default user" appears. Help .. how can I get everything back ? We have XP
home and on a network with 1 other computer
