Hi Everybody-

I have installed windows xp many, many times.
I have owned many computers.
I maintain computers for a living.
I have never seen this problem on any other computer.
I have reinstalled my OS about 6 times now thinking I can figure out what is
causing the problem.

The problem is completely random, or so it seems.
It may happen 2 - 5 times in a row, then stop. Then not happen again for
hours.
Or it may continue happening for hours.

This is the problem.
When I click (left click) on a desktop icon, it will disappear for about a
second, then re-appear.
When that happens the last icon I clicked on, will also disapper with it.
It also seems that while in this state, all menus when I click them will
pause half way down, then resume.
This is all menus, OS and even some apps too.

This is driving me crazy.
This is also a new computer.

Athlon 64 X2 4600+
XFX GeForce 7600 GT PCIe
1 gig Corsair PC6400 DDR2 800Mhz dual

What else do you need to know?
Please let me know as I must solve this problem.
Thanks all-

Victor Lion

I can't believe this.
After 6 months of trying to fix this, I discovered the problem.
Next time I should post first and I'll probably figure it out!

The problem was with my mouse.
Well actually the way I had it connected to my computer.
Its a MS USB wheel Optical Mouse.
I was using one of those adapters that allow it to plug into a PS2 mouse
port.
As soon as I plugged it into the USB port, the problem disappeared.

I'm a happy camper.
I find it strange nobody thought of the mouse as the potential problem.
Oh well, its fixed now.

Having a mouse cause the problem and still be usable is really kind of rare.

I agree- it took 2 days and the problem started again. I probably would not
have posted it due to lack of response. But since you took the effort, so it
is. Very strange problem. Now I wonder if it could be heat related. It seems
to be OK most of the time now. Usually when I get busy is when it acts up.

Another thing i have found with optical mice is that they usually like plain
white printer paper best. Mouse pads are a sometimes thing, some just
don't work well with some particular make / models of optical mouse. Mice
are usually not very expensive, consider buying 2 or 3 different ones and
see if it seems to be make / model related.
