desktop icons corrupted

Desktop icons are positioned on top of each other. Icons
can't be moved and are locked in position but icon lock
option is off. Arrange icons by options (align to grid,
arrange alphabetically, etc) are ghosted. Icons got
corrupted after trying to access blank diskette in floppy
A drive via windows exploxer. Window exploxer hung up
and did <cntl><alt><delete> to shutdown but that hung
too. Eventually had to unplug PC to shutdown. Upon
reboot icons were repositioned on top of each other in
single column and runs off the screen so not all icons
are displayed. Any ideas?.

Additional info on problem that I left out is that the
ghosted or greyed out options for the arrange icons by
command has a grey out check on the align to grid
command. What is causing the arrange icons by command
options to be greyed out and how can I get the commands
back?
