desktop icon not sticking

I know, this has been discussed many times before, but I still can't get
this system 32\shell 32.dll MS-Butterfly icon to stick on a desktop
shortcut.
It has been mentioned here to put a checkmark in
Properties/General/Attributes, but Vista won't let me do this. Could that be
a security problem?

I reduced all icons to 'classic view' and now none will revert to generic.
That seems to be the trick. Thanks for taking the time.

If you have a propensity for using a lot of custom icons like I do, you need
to create a folder where you can permanently store all of these icons. This
will allow you to link directly to this custom folder and the icon you wish
to use. This takes the handling of icons away from the system and can solve
a lot of problems. There are tons of nice free icons available on the
internet and you can also copy many from the Internet Explorer\Temporary
Internet Files folder.
