Desktop icon double images

I am experiencing issues when I place new items onto the
desktop and I get a double icon. It appears that there
is a fathom icon and a real application icon. What can I
do to stop this?

The desktop is composed of two folders, one personal and one common. You have set both to the same folder. Look here and see what you did. Desktop and CommonDesktop are the values.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserShell Folders
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
