desktop icon backgrounds

On my desktop computer the icons have backgrounds around the words below the
icon. I can change the color of this background in display properties but I
cannot get rid of it. Also, some icons (such as IE) have some sort of shadow
in the same color that surrounds the words. On my laptop I do not have these
backgrounds. Instead, it just looks like the words are typed directly on top
of my wallpaper. How can I get rid of the backgrounds? It makes the desktop
look very messy.

Right click Desktop | Properties | Appearance tab |
Effects button | UNCheck: Use shadows under menus |
OK | Apply | OK

[[Specifies whether menus cast a slight shadow. The shadows give the menus a
three-dimensional look.]]

I've tried that with no luck. I am quite puzzled by this problem.

Neely,

Have a look at this...

Desktop icons and icon labels may not display background transparency or the
drop shadow effect in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP

Well, before I saw your latest reply I kept playing around and finally fixed
the problem. It's so nice to be able to find a solution to even minor
problems that nag at you. What I did was I went to display properties, then
desktop, then customize desktop. I went to the "Web" tab in the window that
popped up and deselected "Lock desktop items." I'm not 100 % sure why that
worked, but it did and I am thrilled! :) Thanks for trying to help me.

I have no idea why that worked either.

[[Specifies whether Web content windows or items that you have placed on
your desktop are locked in place and can’t be moved. Select the check box to
lock Web content in place. Clear the check box if you want to be able to
move Web content.]]

But glad you it sorted out. Keep having fun! :-)
