Desktop folder will not delete !!!!

M

McTaffish

Hope there are some computer whizzkids on here who can help me out.I
downloaded a bit torrent yesterday (folder of games, themes etc for the K700i
Sony Ericsson mobile). They were in the .rar format but something went AWOL
when i was trying to extract the .rar files and as far as i was
concerned, the download had failed. However,i'm now left with a folder on the
desktop (titled Sony Ericsson bla bla bla) and whatever i do,it will not
delete (Error message..."Cannot delete file.Cannot read form the source file
or disk").I'm unable to open it,rename it or send it to the recycle bin. It's
just stuck there..lol.When i've gone to Safe Mode that has failed to rid the
thing as well.It is apparently empty but why the chuff can't i delete it?
I've run a virus scan, spyware search etc and everything comes up all
clear.I've also tried a couple of utilities on the net such as GiPO Move on
Boot and that doesn't work either? There's no sign of the botched download
anywhere else on the hardrive apart from this folder!! Any assistance
welcome.Yours confused,McTaffish

Try this solution from
http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=252231&highlight=delete+files

Close all open apps. Open a command prompt and navigate to the directory with
the offending files. Then open the Task Manager and click on the Processes tab.
select "Explorer.Exe" under Image Name. Click "End Process".

Now you will only have the command prompt and the task manager. In the Command
Prompt, DEL the offending files
(DEL *.mpg, DEL mus*.avi, DEL test.wmv, etc.)

The files should now delete without a problem. Now go back to the task manager
and click on the Applications tab. Click
the "New Task..." button. in the dialog, type Explorer.Exe and click OK

Try This. Got to "My Computer" double click on the "C:\" drive, then go to
"Documents and Settings". Open up the Administrator, All Users and your name
folders one at a time. As you go into each user folder, then go to "Desktop"
look in each Desktop folder for the folder you are looking for, select it
and then delete it. Go to the next "User Folder" and again to Desktop and
repeat tthe process. Continue doing this until you've gone through each
"User Folder". That should solve the problem for you.

Good luck.

Thanks for both the replies.I have tried the second solution but it still
refuses to delete the folder when i try.It is a stubborn wee soul by the
looks of it.As for the command prompt,i'm totally clueless with this.I know
how to start command prompt but after that i do not know what to type or how
to navigate to the desktop directory. If there is any way you can describe
how to do this i'd be really grateful. The task manager is not the
problem, just working my way through command prompt.Cheers.

Right Brian, cheers for your help once again mate.I have followed the stages
below.I can see the folder/file/whatever it is, in the list in Command
Prompt :- C:\Documents and Settings\MARK\Desktop\

I believe its full name is :- (note there is a <DIR> to the left of the
name)
Sony Ericsson K700 mobile games-Over 700 java games_for_Sony
Ericsson+Nokia6600.3650.k700.

However, when i press enter to delete it states:-

Could Not Find C:\Documents and Settings\MARK\Desktop\Sony

There are 33 Files and 3 Dir in this listing. The one <DIR> is this Sony
nuisance
and they are:-

<DIR> .
<DIR> . .
<DIR> Sony Ericsson K700 mobile games-Over 700 java
games_for_Sony Ericsson+Nokia6600.3650.k700.

I've tried to describe it as best as i can Brian.Being a novice at CMD,i'm
surprised i've got this far !! ;-) However,now i can see it there,it still
won't delete !?

Damn LFN's! (Long File Names)
Try at the C:\Documents and Settings\MARK\Desktop\ prompt:

dir /x
Should show the dos 8.3 name before the lfn and the folder dos name should look
like: sonyer~1. Use the dos name for deletion. First remove any attributes
just in case.
attrib -s -r -h -a sony~1 **Note space after b, s, r, h, and a
del /f sony~1 ** space after L and f
del sonyer~1 **space after L
Press Y to confirm deletion and press Enter.
Type exit.

No joy Brian.Followed all that you said but when i type in dir/x there is no
sign of the Sony terror :-( It states that it cannot find the file specified
whenever i attempt to look for Sony.

I really appreciate your help mate but perhaps i am stuck with this thing
until the need comes to reformat the system? I don't particularly want to
reformat now as i have so much stuff on here and it will take me ages to get
to this stage again. It doesn't appear to be a virus or spyware, not that i'm
an expert so mayabe i should admit defeat to this particular
nuisance.....time to fly the white flag? ;-) lol

Brian A.

To be clear, you typed dir /x, that's dir space /x, and not dir/x, correct?
If it showed when you use only dir as <DIR> Sony Ericsson K700 mobile
games-Over 700 java games_for_Sony Ericsson+Nokia6600.3650.k700, then it should
show the 8.3 dos file name as mentioned using the /x switch.

Did you even try the rest of the commands suggested to delete it?
I notice I mention 2 dels when only one or the other is needed.
Using del /f forces the deletion of read only files.
