Desktop Display Background

Lately I have been having a problem with a white screen taking over my
Desktop Display Background. No matter what backround I select e.g
Windows XP etc the background still shows up white. My OS is Windows
XP Professional. Is there anyone who might be able to help me out and
get rid of the white background? Thanks in advance.

Is your computer virus/malware free? Be sure:

The Desktop display can be affected by malware. You haven't given us any
information about what you are seeing or your computer, but here are a
few things to check. Go to the Display applet in Control Panel and look
on the Desktop tab. Click on Customize Desktop, and then click on the
Web tab. You will see that there are checkmarks next to "My Current
Home Page" and probably "Lock Desktop Items". Uncheck these. By
highlighting the "My Current Home Page" and clicking on the Properties
button, you will be able to determine the name of the file that is the
message. It might be called something like "security.html" or the like.

Click Apply and OK out when you've made your changes. Then you want to
find the *.html malware file and delete it.

If you can't enable desktop backgrounds after a virus, MVP Kelly Theriot
has a fix. Look under Wallpaper-Desktop-Disable Changing here:

If Display tabs are missing, run Kelly's registry edit on line 285,
right-hand side "Restore all display tabs".

If you need more help, please go to this link to see what kind of
details you should include in your next post:

I followed your intructions re:customize desktop than web tab.
Lo and behold there was another option checked off called
"Warning Home Page" or something like that. Anyway I
deleted it and checkmarked "MyCurrent Home Page"
applied changes and problem solved.
I have no doubt the "Warning option was inserted by
some malware type. I don't know if really want to go
thru the extensive procedure for clearing out virsuses
or malware.
I did a virus check using AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
and it came up clean. I also used Spybot to check
for spyware. Also came up clean.
Do you know of any web based URLs that test PCs
for viruses and or malware?
Anyway, I want to thank you for your very detail help
in solving my problem. Much appreciated.

None of the tools I recommend in my "removing malware" steps cost
anything. I would suggest you try at least Ad-aware and Spybot Search &
Destroy (again), making sure you have the latest version of both and
that you update the programs before running them. Then do the scans in
Safe Mode.

I don't suggest using online scans for malware except as a last resort
because malware will normally be active when your machine is online.
