Desktop Disappears

Can anyone help me figure out why the desktop, including
task bars and system tray are not visible on my system.
System seems to be running OK. I can bring up a command
prompt and run programs but there is nothing on the
screen until I run that task using task manager...

My customer was loading some DSL modem software when it
started..
