how can I get XP to display .jpg images (or any thing other than .bmp) for
my desktop background????? I have a hundred or so of such questions.

view image in mspaint
right-click to "set as background"

You can download irfanview from irfanview.com. This is a great, free
graphics utility that will allow you to tailor images to fit your desktop,
plus loads of other features.
