Desktop background won't change

I tried to change the desktop background on my XPSP2 box but nothing happens.
I tried both from control panel and right clicking on the desktop. I did have
a custom jpg that showed in the list, but even that's now gone. Suggestions?
 
when you right clicked the desktop was the list of pictures greyed out?
 
No. Only the default pix showed. I could browse to what I wanted but then XP
would NOT accept my selection.
 
I am having the same problem. I recently installed SP2 and now I can't even
scroll through the list of options. Is there a resolution?
