Desktop Background Image Oddity

I investigated a problem someone was having with displaying a .GIF image as
thier desktop background. It's a standard .GIF image, nothing special. It
displays fine if tiled or stretched, but if choose to center it, the image
disappears as soon as I hit apply or OK. Anyone have an idea?
