My computer would not close down properly and so i had to hold in the start
button to close it. When i restarted my computer the next day it started in
safe mode. As my computer would not restart due to the same problem i could
not remove safe mode. i have put done a system restore but the resolution of
my desktop is still as it was in safe mode. how do i get my normal screen
quality?

Right click on the Desktop and select Properties. Click the Settings tab
and adjust the Screen resolution to what your monitor and your eyes can
handle and the Color quality to 16 or 32 bit. If it is fixed at
640x480, you may need to reinstall your display driver.

Thank you for your help. Is there a simple explanation of how i can
reinstall my display driver?

Best bet is to go to the manufacturer's website, and go to the Downloads page.
Most have drivers, and install instructions.
Some drivers are self-installing.
Depending an the brand you have, there may be a "Wizard" (HP, and maybe
others) on the site that you run, to find the exact drivers for your machine.
Or, for Dell, a "Service Tag" number, (on the back of the computer, in a
1.5"x0.5" white rectangle) that you enter.
