| How can I arrange my desktop the way I want it?
If they snap back immediately, then you need to turn off the
auto-arrange option (right-click the desktop background, choose
Arrange and remove the checkmark next to the Auto Arrange option).
Also, right-click the desktop, choose Properties, then Desktop, then
Customize Desktop, and go to the Web tab. Remove the checkmark next to
"Lock Desktop Items" and then click Apply.
If you want to make a backup of the positions, the free Activicons
utility has the option to save/restore up to 10 desktop arrangements
on its "Desktop Controls" screen.
