desktop and task bar gone

My desktop icons and taskbar/start button have gone. The only thing that remains is my background. The only way I'm able to run systems is through the task manager. The right click button is unresponsive as well as all function keys. When I shut down the computer i can see it all just as it is shutting down. It appears that there is some sort of warning or alert message but, I am unable to read it as it flashes and is gone so quickly. Your help in with this problem is greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Katrina

if people reply without using the original thread, as they seem to be doing
recently, how do i find any replies to a post that i have made. all the
replies are being returned "re:.......".

the original post may be in the text but if i have marked my post to 'watch'
it, the replies won't be there i'll have to go thru all the posts to find
them.

why are they being displayed without the original thread? this never used to
be the case.

thanks.
