DeskNow Mail & Collaboration server v2.0 [22.5M] W98/2k/XP FREE

DeskNow Lite is a free mail and collaboration server. In addition to
standard SMTP and POP3, it offers Web-based collaboration tools, such as
advanced Web mail with spam filtering, document management to let users
store and share documents online, unlimited Web calendars with sharing and
combined views, shared address book, and message boards. You can also use
your existing ISP instead of the built-in mail server capabilities. Despite
the many features, DeskNow is remarkably easy to us, thanks to the
well-designed and user-friendly interface that allows you to understand and
use the system in a matter of minutes. The initial configuration wizard will
guide you through the setup and you will have a fully functional
collaboration server up and running in about five minutes. It even includes
a Java-based instant messenger that allows you to chat with other users that
are currently logged in. The free Lite version can be upgraded to the
Professional version (commercial), which adds secure instant messaging,
access from Palm, PocketPC and WAP devices, access to remote files as a
network drive, and more. If you are looking for a collaboration server, this
is one of the first you should try! [MWA]

---info snipped can be read on their site---

Please allow me to express my personal experience with this program. I ran
it, or tried to run it. It was great for a few hours. I'm on a 450 box
with WinME and just under 300 megs of RAM. The program constantly greeted
me with a low resource window and asked me if I wanted to begin shutting
down programs. Actually, I wasn't running anything more than I normally do
except for the DeskNow. After the fourth time this happened in two days
span I decided to uninstall the program.

For the features, it really isn't a bad plan...if your computer has the
cajones to run it. However, click over to their Buy page and take a close
look at what you get to keep after your 30 day trial should you decide to
not purchase a license.

Now, on the other hand, if you Google for some open-source programs you can
find loads of portal programs that do as much or more. For example, I've
got about 20 open-source portals sitting in my download folder for me to go
through. Currently I'm operating on the EasyPHP which popped in Apache,
PHP, MySQL as well as some tools. On top of that I've loaded PHP-Nuke which
is a pretty sharp portal. Although some of the configurations seem a bit
quirky to me it does afford me articles, polls, downloads, links, journal,
webmail and a couple other odds and ends. It also installed PHPbb. Keep in
mind that when I installed this EasyPHP and PHP-Nuke I knew absolutely
nothing about MySQL or PHP. This was only a few days ago and I can say that
at this point I still barely know more than how to spell them.

For an email server there are several freeware servers out and about. I've
used Hermes which also had functions for maillist, but have used ArGoSoft's
freeware email server for quite some time since I didn't really have need of
the maillist.

Although I thoroughly detest Hamster I'm using it as a NNTP server. I have
registered two NNTP servers but both turned out to be pretty buggy. I used
TYPSoft's ftp server for quite some time until I came across Pablo Van Der
Meer's software. Anyone who's not familiar with his software should really
take a look. Great little programs. Very lightweight and perform the
duties I require of them. The ftp server sits down in the corner of my
screen and needs absolutely no attendance. It was quite easy to setup. His
webserver does a quite good job with ASP although I've found some scripts
that it does balk at. If I knew anything about ASP I would probably go in
and see what the problem was.

All in all, I'm pretty satisfied with the open-source and freeware programs
that I'm currently using except that I'm not too fond of what it takes to
operate the Apache webserver.
