desk top icons dissappeared

Just bought a custom tower with XP Home.
It had a group of icons added as I added programs.
My wife was trying to put a picture of our grandchildren
as background for the desk top and... lo and behold! ..
the icons dissappeared!
Now I cannot figure out how to restore them. I follow the
directions in the help section but, nothing happens.

The picture covered the icons in the active desktop view. I generally frown on
active desktop, but you can get the icons back and speed up your desktop if you
change the wallpaper from .jpg to .bmp. First, locate the wallpaper, then open
it in paint and resave as wallpaper.bmp. You can set it as wallpaper right from
paint and then close it. Right click your desktop and the top option for active
desktop will need to be turned off. Your desktop icons should show up on top of
your brand spanking new wallpaper.

Right click the Desktop/Arrange Icons by/Show Desktop Icons.
