Can someone tell me how to change the desk top icon in the quick launch area
of the task bar in Win98SE?

If you mean use another icon for Show Desktop, then try altering it in
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick
Launch\Show Desktop.scf
