I currently support 40 computers running win xp pro. My users have power
user rights to the computer. My company does not have a domain. how can I
set the computers to run windows update without my going to each individual
system to manually download them? Can I do it possibly through computer
management as I found I could change user names and passwords through there?

Greetings,

You can leave the automatic updates running in the background on each
computer.

1) Rigth click "My Computer", right click Properties
2) Click on the "Automatic Updates" tab and just tick the first option :)

Thanks and best of luck!

Another option is SUS from M$. This way, you would be in control !
