Deploying Windows Server 2003 out of the box from Dell without a c

I'm helping someone deploy Windows 2003 Server out of the box server from
Dell. I'm a IT professional desktop support tech, but I've not done anything
with servers.

This scenario has no internet connection. The IP is setting to 192.168.0.1
on the server. I have 2 questions:

Did the server need to "register" with Microsoft and thus get on line? The
XP workstations did but that worked okay when they were temporarily plugged
into an internet connection.

Why won't the server NIC return a PING? This is all hooked up to a small 5
port Linksys hub. The XP boxes see each other but the server isn't acting
like TCPIP is working on it. Changing the IP of the server to something else
doesn't even "stick" long on the server itself.

Any suggestions?

Steven

You mean, it isn't responding to a ping by IP address?

Post an ipconfig /all from the server and also from one workstation.
Also - are you using a domain or a workgroup?
