DEP on video clips

Everytime I open a folder with video clips in it, e.g. mpg, avi etc., XP SP2
generates a Data Execution Protection and shuts down all folder windows. I
have not done a thing yet! It is fine with jpg files. Looks like any mpg avi
files created by ANY vendors get this error. How to resolve this issue?

Thanks,
Dennis

You could just disable DEP, but I wouldn't recommend it. Boot your machine in
safe mode and open up a command prompt window and enter the following as it
appears:
bootcfg /raw “/noexecute=alwaysoff /fastdetect†/id 1

Or check this info:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/prodtech/windowsxp/depcnfxp.mspx
http://bubble.ro/Data_Execution_Prevention_error_message_in_Windows_XP.html

Before you do that, please try to deinstall any codecs you may have on your
system and install Coda v3.3. See if the problem will persist.

Thanks for the reply.
More questions:
- disabling DEP only for Window Explorer still not good choice?
- how to find and de-install any codecs? I have install Xvid but nothing
happened...
- seems that it needs to install some software (file sharing) before
downloading Coda 3.3?

Thanks again,
Dennis

Sounds like a SmitFraud/Zlob variant infection to me.

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Don't disable DEP, just open the DEP control panel from
system/advanced/virtual memory/advanced and/or Data
Execution Protection. Allow an exception for Windows
Explorer. You should then be able to open the video folders.
Moving or copying them to other places may still beget an error

I have the same problem as describe in this post. I do not know if installing
the suggested codec might help. I have reformatted my drive the assumption is
in pristine condition. As soon as I install a media conversion program
containing Xvid codec Window Explorer.exe start triggering Dr. Watson, DEP
has not appeared yet. Currently I am still using the default media player 9.
I do not know what happen if it is up graded to version 11 and start using
the window media run time add in or what ever it is termed. Can some expert
help in this issue please?

Appreciate the assistance
