How to turn off DEP in XP SP2

Window explorer keeps closing itself due to Data Execution Protection (DEP)
when I try to open the folder that contains .mpg files. This is not an issue
for XP SP1. Is there any way to turn off DEP feature?

prevention tab - uncheck - go out with ok

You've already got instructions for turning off DEP but I thought I'd add
something different.

Windows Explorer doesn't keep "closing itself". Something installed on
your system isn't working properly and is causing these DEP errors,
probably a multimedia player / tool installed a while ago. Rather than
turn off a useful feature you might try looking for the problem (start by
updating any movie player software you have) to see if you can fix the
fault "properly".

It's a pain in the butt to look at it this way I know. I won't deny my
answer will take much longer than turning off DEP, but you might be better
off in the long run. Much the same as dealing with an oil leak warning
light on your car by finding and fixing the leak instead of just covering
up the dashboard with duck tape until you can't see the light gleaming any
longer...

I'm always surprised at "professionals" who STILL have to be asked:
"Have you checked (event viewer / syslog)".

Besides, DEP prevents certain hacking programs. It is a very very bad idea
to turn off DEP especially since the problem lies elsewhere.

I have Pinnacle Studio 9 on a dual core Athlon machine. I cannot get in to
folders containing video files (inc mpgs) without DEP switching Explorer off.
I have upgraded to the best available version of Studio 9.4.3 but to no
avail. If I try to access avi through the default Nero Showtime DEP shuts
Showtime down, even though the avi files were not created with Studio. I am
using XP Home Edition service pack 2.

OK. I can now tell you something of the nature of the probelem lies but not
the full cause or cure. Perhaps our MS rep can help us?

The problem seems to be if you are viewing the files in the folder in
'thumbnail' mode. This mode previews the video file (shows a frame) and in
trying to do that it triggers the DEP. May be a codec issue, though I would
have thought that Pinnacle (I use Studio 9) would have used standard codecs.
You can turn off the preview feature via some commands, however if you are
quick enough you can change the view to 'list' BEFORE the DEP shuts Explorer
down. You can then get into the folder without raising the wrath of DEP.

Some folk have had this problem re avi files.

I am surprised that MS and Pinnacle have not gotten together to work this
out, as the preview facility is quite useful. The software has been around
long enough. I have passed my findings on to Pinnacle. NB the same issue
has haunted mpeg files in a different folder that were created by Ulead
Videostudio 7., so it may not be a 3rd party software issue but a weakness
within Explorer. If I find out more will post it here.
