denied file access XP after OS HD crash

I had to reinstall windows XP professionnal on a new HD. I had data on a
secondary drive. The folder was set to make private. I have SP2.

I can't access it. When I follow the instructions in 308421 how to take
ownership of a file or folder in XP, I go to the folder, right click on it,
then properties but I don't see the security tab... In the sharing tab the
"make private" selection box is grayed out...

What do I have to do?

Thanks,

Hi

This is documented as well in KB article 308421 (pretty much at
the top)

Note: You must be logged on to the computer with an account that
has administrative credentials. If you are running Microsoft
Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode,
and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights to
have access to the Security tab.

If you are using Windows XP Professional, you must disable Simple
File Sharing. By default, Windows XP Professional uses Simple File
sharing when it is not joined to a domain.

For additional information about how to do this, click the
following article number to view the article in the Microsoft

Here is my standard post on how to access the Security tab:

For Windows XP Professional, the instructions here can be

Re-run setup from the Windows XP installation disk and choose to repair the
corrupted installation on the disk during the DOS Setup portion of XP.

Thanks for the info, I logged on in safe mode in administrator and was able
to restore access using take ownership.

It<s funny since I have XP Pro not home edition and I had admin privilege
whne not in safe mode but couldn't do it.

Regards,
