Dell Underclocks their CPU's

I spoke to a dell rep about 3 of my computers. I beleive they under-clock
their computers.

I have 3.00 GHz machine and in system properties it is listed as 2.99 GHz,
there is no options in the Bios to do anything about this. In the Bios clock
speed reads 3.00 Ghz. My other Dells are the same. 1.7 Ghz listed at 1.68
Ghz and 2.40Ghz listed at 2.38 Ghz.

They told me this is normal. I pay for a 3.00 Ghz machine, should I get a
3.00 Ghz machine.

Could anyone check their machine for this.

This is common in most computers. You got what you paid for.

Moron - when you finish kindergarten let us know. The FSB and CPU clock
frequencies are derived from an oscillator which is probably running at kHz
NOT MHz. If the oscillator frequency shifts by 1 Hz then the bus frequencies
shift by kHz given the multiplier is in the 1000s.

P.S. Does your watch ever lose or gain time. Just daily temperature
variation means the oscillator slows down or speeds up. The exact watch
would keep different time in New York than it would in Miami.

Ross,

You can get an MSI motherboard with the MSI CoreCell chip which dynamically
increases CPU speed according to load. :)

Do you think you could actually tell the difference beteen 2.99 and 3.00?
<LOL>
Specifications are usually rounded off, [usually up] to the next point. Did
you know the 5.0 Ford Mustang was not really 5.0 liters?

Delluser probably will not be happy until he's tweaked things up a little,
and achieves an unstable hardware setup ! :-)
.....then he'll be straight back in here with a list of Windows error
messages and, "....HeeEEELP ...after it's been on for a few minutes it locks
up, ...and the screen just suddenly goes black / CLICK / and the thing
reboots itself " !!! LOL

I got one of those boards, works great. Got some good stable OCing values
with it.

My car has a badge proclaiming "3.9 litre". Calculation based on bore
(91.86mm), stroke (99.31mm) and cylinders (6) gives 3.94899 litre. Wow! I
get more than I pay for !!!!

Perhaps Dell also engage in judicious rounding????

Welcome to the real world.

As long as System Properties identifies it as it's correct speed (3.0 Gig)
don't worry about it. Computer's require precise timing. A master clock
is generated from a Crystal Oscillator and maintained by a Phase Lock
Loop. All circuitry has allowable tolerances +/-, or % - 2.99 Gigahertz
is probably a truncated form of 2,999,999,99x Hertz.

Wait up, Michael

Next, you will be telling me that my '69 Honda CB750 wasn't a real 750 at
all because it only displaced 736 cc.. How could you?.. How could they?.. :)

You're kidding, right? You got what you paid for. Haven't you ever
heard of "rounding off?"

All of these numbers are rounded, and correct. The differences
you see are *tiny* and completely inconsequential. From 2.99 GHz
to 3.00 is 1/3 of a percentage point and unnoticeable.

Even if it were possible to unclock achieving only 1/3 of a
percentage point (it's not) nobody would bother doing this.

They told me this is normal. I pay for a 3.00 Ghz machine,
should I
get a 3.00 Ghz machine.

If that's the way you feel, you should return your computers and
get your money back. But note that you won't find anything any
different with any other computers.

By the way, I bought a 2450 sq. ft. house. I measured it very
carefully and found that it was only 2449.8 sq. ft. Should I
complain about that?

a. Megahertz measurement may be inaccurate if other programs were busy during
last analysis.

---Footnote from Belarc Advisor Current Profile.

Also, Windows (System & User & GDI--Win 98SE) Resources Meter uses system
resources when it is running. This may cause your computer to run more slowly.

Maybe buying a newer computer with Win XP would eliminate my need to confer with
this meter?
