Dell Optiplex GX620 SFF Upgrades................

T

TOOL

I have a gx620 sff pent. 4 3.0 ghz - 40gb hdd - 512 mem 1906fp monitor
-
I am already in the process of upgrading my memory to the max. 4gb -
But also want to upgrade my hdd and have looked into 500gb - Dell
claims that my chasis will not support a drive that large - However
after having completed my own research I have found that the 500gb is
the same size dimensionally as the 40gb I currently have - Also I have
been doing most of my research on Weatern Digital's website (since
Dell uses their drives) to check this info. out - Does anyone have any
advice on this matter?

Physical size is not linked to capacity. 3.5" drives are available up to
750GB - Seagate Barracuda and HP model 432341-B21.

You misunderstood Dell. By your system not supporting a 500 GB harddrive,
they meant that your older motherboard's BIOS COULD NOT recognize a
harddrive of that capacity. You are probably limited to something between
40 and 80 GB of harddrive capacity.

Unlikely. There is a limit at 32GB due to an award bios bug,
but very few are limited to anything else until the 128GB limit
due to the lack of support for 48bit LBA.

.... and a P4/3GHz system almost certainly has 48bit LBA
support. If there is any remaining bug about supporting
500GB drive or larger, there *ought* to be a bios update to
address that.

IOW, OP should just buy the drive capacity needed and expect
it to work, but it would be good to check on a bios update
anyway.
