Dell motherboards/gfx cards

Hi, my brother in law is set on buying a dell (I've offered to build him a rig but hey ho) he's skint so is planning on buying the £349 build here:

he'd asked about whether he should take the gfx upgrade, but I can supply him with a better card for less cash, just wanted to check anyone know if Dell take any steps to stop you upgrading your gfx card? The reson I ask is that I have built my own rigs for years, but remember a friend of mine buying a pre built machine many years ago that had solder across the RAM slots to stop you upgrading it.

Come on V_R, dell not that bad. I have bought a dell xps 430, and the problem with upgrading yourself is that it will blue screen. However i found a way around it, due to me hating vista i downgraded to xp (this is something dell tell you not to do) then i was free to add any hardware i wanted. So new sound card and wireless card went in no problem. But i warn you downgrading a dell is not the easiest thing to do, hours of searching for the right drivers.

Ok, i'll elaborate.

Dell are great for corporations or 'novice users' If however you are asking on a forum about what is a good pc to buy i'd say your a little more than just a novice.

I'd also say if your not confident about building yourself (Preferred) then strongly consider buying from an online company such as Overclockers UK, Cyberpower or PC Specialist etc etc etc.

You will get a better spec and more 'upgradable' pc than you will from dell. Hey you may even get a 'real windows disk' lol.

true, but i still like dell, maybe cos they just keep on going. My sister has had her dell laptop for over 4 years and it still works pretty well. But yes the upgradable stuff is what lets it down, you cant really upgrade without having a problem. Its a shame really if dell unlocked some stuff and had better IT support to help with people to overclock their systems then well it could be really good.

Nowt wrong with Dell for the average user. But anymore than that i'd agree with you...I have used Dell's for years for office work sort of thing and they are fine...And depending on which country you are in you also get pretty decent support from them. Well thats my opinion of support in the UK...

Suppose they ok if you a numbnuts and you know it's useful life will only be about 3 years but.... well.

I've only once played with a Dell - and it would only work with Win XP, the PSU was unique to that machine and it came with a pre-installed recovery partition.

In their defence, their laptops are ok, but you don't upgrade laptops, do you? You just throw them away and get a new one.

That law should not apply to desktops but with Dell it does.

WTF ?? I am assuming you mean a pre-installed recovery partition relating to the OS and not the PSU ???
