go "online"-the choice is shaded out, and printer says "offline". cannot
print test page. tried deleting and re installing, same problem.
any ideas are appreciated!!

Make shure the USB cable is not plugged in till after the software is
installed.
Then try printing. This is the way I had to do it to make my 946 work.

Thanks RJ..I did try that! I also uninstalled the drivers, unplugged the
USB, re-installed and hooked up USB when it told me to..still, not working.
I am stumped, and a little annoyed. OK, a lot annoyed, and really
regretting Vista on this new computer.

Anyone else?!

Thanks!!

same problem here with my Dell A940. Been screwing with it every evening
this week & still no printer. device manager sees the printer, but when
trying to preint, it goes offline, not to return. I think I tried what was
described above, but not sure. Will try again tonight.

Got a great buy @ circuit City on this laptop....maybe not so great since it
has Vista.....should have waited until Vista was a little more mature.

No, you should have waited until Dell got their act together!!!

Nothing wrong with Vista... provided the hardware vendors have written the
drivers. But then again, I have Canon and Lexmark printers.

LOL! We would be waiting EONS!!

My mistake was thinking that Dell products would actually work together. My
bad.

I have been all over the internets, and so many people have this same issue
, it is sad to see. Even worse, noone knows how to fix it! You would laugh
if I told you what Dell support told me. Same old "install the drivers on
the website, blahblah blah", and then after telling them I have already DONE
all of this, to no avail, telling me they are just "not sure". I have most
certainly purchased my last Dell anything.

So, here is the new question! What printer WILL work with my brand new XPS
710/Vista 32 bit Home premium?!

Thanks so much.

Uhhh, not even the Vista drivers work on this Dell printer. "Nothing wrong
with Vista???" Have you read any of the messages in this forum? No printer
functionality, not connecting to the internet, these sound like pretty
significant problems with Vista!

Dell is not the only brand name printer having issues here. I also see
Epson, HP & others listed with the same exact problems. BTW....Lexmark made
the A940...only thing different was likely the logo & the print cartridge.
Do a search for the Lexmark 5100 & compare to Dell A940. I'm betting there's
not much difference between the drivers if Dell even creates their own
drivers.

I GOT MY DELL A940 TO PRINT!

See if this works for you....I had the same downloaded & installed new
drivers, "see it, but no test print/offline" issue.

After installing drivers, go to Control Panel > Printers
-Right click on the printer, go to Properties, then the Ports Tab. Disable
"Enable bidirectional support"
-Then, if yours is like mine, you can then print.

Good Luck!

OMG!!!

IT WORKS!!!

I have no idea why, but I disabled that support function, and viola!
Printing! For now, anyways!

I hope everyone having this issue reads this...
Thanks again.

Not sure exactly what that makes it work. I looked at my XP machine which
also has this printer installed & it is fine with that function enabled.
Still seem to have all the printer & scanner functions, so I guess it doesn't
matter.

Cari,
you arrogant jerk. these things worked fine on XP. the common problem is
Vista!
why don't you offer every Vista user a fee XP license and see how many
takers you get

Everyone is welcome to go out and buy a retail copy of XP and install it
instead of Vista. And I don't think I could afford to give everyone a free
copy of XP, I'm not paid for the work I do here.

Of course, the OP could ask Dell for a copy of XP, they are still shipping
it on PCs, one of the few manufacturers left who do. Then again, they could
also ask Dell to give them updated drivers for the Dell printer.

Were you around when XP first shipped? I assure you, it was much worse than
Vista is for driver availability.

I have an AIO 960 installed with Vista and it works fine. It didn't at
first until I downloaded and installed the new drivers from the Dell site.
Also HAD to install the software with the printer connected and powered on.
Would not work if I tried to install the drivers first. Good luck.
