Dell 8300,Radeon 9800 Pro..not work with 3Dmark 2003

Hi,

Ive just purchased a Dell 8300 3Ghz with 800mhz fsb, Radeon 9800 pro
graphics card & XP service pack 1. You would expect all drivers in this
newly purchased and factory configured machine to work correctly..do they
F**K!

The first piece of software i installed was 3Dmark 2003 as i was eager to
measure the 3d performance of this beast..after 15 seconds of running the
first test the screen went haywire and i had to reboot the machine.
I've now tried all recent revisions of the drivers up to Catalyst 3.6 to no
avail...could it be the card or something else?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

My opinion is it is always best to reinstall the OS and all that right out
the box. Be advised that I HAD to use the Dell ATI drivers prior to the CAT
drivers. When I went straight to the CAT drivers I could only get 3-4K on
3dmark03. Once I installed the Dell drivers, and then installed the CAT 3.4
drivers I scored around 5200.

Take care,

Actually, I would expect that the drivers were up to date as of a few
weeks before your product line started rolling off the Assembly Line at
Dell.

You should run Windows Update at a minimum, and then check to make sure
you have the latest mobo drivers, etc.

I've got Direct x 9.0a....i've found that the most stable driver so far is
the unofficial 3rd party Omega driver set...3dmark crashes during the 2nd
test....but gets through the first one fine!??*!!?

Anyone know why?

How would upping the voltages affect the system? (i don't know much about
this)

That is definitively typical of insufficient CPU voltage.
You can either raise the voltage or lower the CPU speed - either should
achieve your aim.

CPU's use more power as the processing load rises.
If the BIOS ain't allowing it to draw enough current, it'll either abort,
hang or reboot.
Try upping it a bit.

I've also noticed that my 2D display becomes corrupt..particularly when
scrolling through text using the roller...

The plot thickens.....

Does anyone know of the bes,t failsafe way to uninstall and reinstall Video
drivers?

Thanks.

Dude you bought a Dell, have you tried their tech-support? Give them a call,
you paid for their 24/7 support when you bought the thing. If you don't want
to or cannot call, try checking their support site...

Negative. Bad hardware happens - kinda like shit happen. :) Get with tech
support and play the game. Sometimes you get it squared away on the first
try and sometimes you don't but you will get it worked out. I recommend
reload the OS prior to worrying too much. I always have too many problems
with the stock image and have to rebuild. Sort of a religous thing with me.
Either way, work with them. Another alternative is to send it back within
30 days and get your money back. You can spend it on another machine or
another dell.

Dunno if you answered this...is it only 3dmark03 you have the problems with?
Or is it all games and such?

One last thing...heat. Do you suffer from a very hot card. I have the
slots next to my 9500pro card open to let it breathe a bit. If it gets too
hot like in my hot house when the a/c is on the blink, it starts corrupting
and other random errors. If I cool it down (the room as well as the pc),
all is well and not a problem. I just have to keep in mind the hot
temperatures in my pc case. My brother rents right next door to my room and
suffers the exact same heat problems. Its happened since the dawn of of
time with video cards. Heat = problems.

A good point - to wit, I just fitted a 60mm Slim Volcano (copper base, alu.
fins) to my Gigabyte Radeon 9700 Pro - with a 92mm 52CFM Globe fan.
Stock speed was 325 / 310, which I got up to 383 / 361 with an 80mm 19CFM
Papst fan on the shipped sink.
Now it's up to 393 / 371 and scores have risen from 17,990 to 18,123 in
3DMk01 - and 5,805 to 5,953 in 3DMk03.

Epox 8RDA3+ (225 FSB - NB 2.0v-dd with Slim Volcano 60mm + 19CFM)

2 x OCZ 256MB PC3700 (446 - 7-3-3 / 2.0 dual - 2.9v-dimm)
Gigabyte Radeon 9700 Pro (376/359 - 1.6v-agp : Slim Volcano + 52CFM)

M gripe is that i have a brand new machine( with ample cooling internally i
hope? I also have a fan in the room, an open window and live in Europe),
preconfigured by the manufacturer with a graphics card running at stock core
and memory frequencies (378 & 337.5) and the thing doesn't work
properly...(i have noticed a bit more stability since i underclocked the
card) which leads me to think that it is definitely the card which is at
fault here...my replacement arrives this morning..we'll see what happens
with that..

I received my replacement card and everything is just fine & dandy.....no
problems whatsoever..

Thanks for everyone's input.
