Is my Radeon 9800 Pro faulty?

K

I have purchased a 2nd hand Radeon 9800 Pro (AGP) video card on Ebay
(Make unknown). When I install the card and boot up the PC the
display is not quite right (See images below)

Initial (BIOS) screen - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Bucks5/P1060726.jpg

Windows XP SP2 - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Bucks5/P1060723.jpg

Is the card faulty or is there something else that may cause this?
Could it be something like the monitor not handling the refresh rate
or a BIOS/AGP setting?

As I cannot even get the card to display native text/vga properly I am
unable to install any drivers etc.

Thanks,

Karl

This to me looks like a faulty card. Mine did the same thing (on
Windows) before I had to replace it...

Just make sure the card is seated properly etc...

IIRC the 9800 requires it's own connection from the power supply.

Thanks for your responses.... The outlook is pretty grim.

I will try and give the pins a bit of a clean on the dodgy card to see
if that makes a difference as I am sure it was "seated" properly.

My usual card is also a 9800 Pro so there shouldn't be any issues with
the motherboard/power supply as it works perrfectly fine. I am not
sure whether card manufacturers would make a huge difference, does it?

Yes the card requires an additional connection to the power supply.

Checked the seating of the heat sink etc? I had heat problems with my
9800pro though that did manifest as 'sparkles' - not sure if heat would
do what is happening to you.

I have a 9800 that has a loose power connector so sometimes
when I boot the PC there is several beeps and a big red and
white warning on the screen to check the power to the card.

I can safely eliminate the heatsink as being an issue as the scrambled
display is the very instant the PC is turned on so it wouldn't had
time to over-heat.

I can also rule out the loose power connector - I have had it detach
from my working 9800 and I have seen what it does.

The dongle suggestion might be worth a try, I have a feeling that it
may be difficult to locate one locally as I couldn't imagine a lot of
stores stocking them.

it prob came with an adapter when it was new...

a better test would be using a proper DVI connection if you happen to know
someone with a nice monitor....
since the analogue part of DVI is basicly the same as the VGA connector

try it in another pc ?

Someone overclocked the card and fried the ram/rom or both.
