Deleting windows.old under windows xp or vista

How do I delete windows.old folder and contents without having to format the
hdd? I tried under both windows xp and vista and they just didnt let me do it.

Have you tried deleting it in safe mode? Also, try taking ownership of the
folder in either Vista or XP then try deleting it.

Yes, it worked 98%, just I wasnt able to change permissions for some
compressed files/folders. Any idea how to do it?
