deleting text does not work

hi, i must have done something but this is what is happening:
if i highlight text in word and press the space bar, the text does not
delete. i have to highlight, right click and left click 'cut'.
can someone advise how to fix, so tat the original word setting is in place
again?

Try: Tools | Options | Edit
Make sure "Typing replaces selection is checked".
Click OK.
