Deleting temp files

The number of files on my computer seems to be growing
exponentially - currently 340,000 - which I am sure is
slowing down the system, and requires a tremendous time
to do a virus scan. I tried using the disc cleanup
routine under accessories, but all it found was my
temporary internet files - it did not find *.tmp files.
So I did a search on "*.tmp,*.chk,~*.*" and found 5894
files listed. I hit CTRL-a to highlight them all, pushed
the delete key, and after quite a long time I got a
message saying: "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from
the source file or the disk". I managed to delete just a
few files by highlighting only those, but then ran into
another message like above and when I tried to push the
okay button, I got a "search not responding". I've tried
this several times after rebooting with the same
results. What do I do now?

The temp folder is located here:(it a hidden folder)
C:\Documents and Settings\your user name here\Local Settings\Temp

Go to the folder and delete the files manually. Anything xp is using will
not be deleted.
