Deleting Section Breaks in Pleadings

I sometimes work on pleadings that have been created by others, and where
section breaks have been added at the end of a document. When I try to
delete these section breaks, Word also deletes the lines and numbers from the
left and right sides of my document. I have never been able to find a way to
delete these section breaks without this occurring. Has anyone else ever had
this problem, and is there any way to fix it? The lines and numbers are in a
header. Any light anyone can shed would be extremely helpful!

The numbers on the sides are in headers and footers which are contained in
the following section break. See the article on working with sections
