Deleting multiple emails

I have been offline for 2 weeks and now have 3000 emails! Is there a way of
deleting groups of them by holding down a particular button or highlighting
it somehow? At the moment I am holding down the control key and deleting but
theis takes ages....Anyone who can help with this really easy question?
 
Highlight the first one, scroll down to the last and hold the Shift key and
select the last, then Delete. If you hold down the Shift and Delete you will
permanently delete and bypass the Deleted Items folder.
