Deleting hiberfil.sys

J

Joshua Beall

Hi All,

If I delete hiberfil.sys without turning off hibernation, will anything bad
happen? Will it be rebuilt if I try to hibernate?

I know how to get rid of it by disabling hibernation. I want to know if I
can delete it w/o doing that, and just have it rebuilt if/when I ever
hibernate my PC.

Thanks!

Q. "If I delete hiberfil.sys without turning off hibernation, will anything bad
happen?"

A. No, unless you try to hibernate your PC, then it won't hibernate.

Q. "Will it be rebuilt if I try to hibernate?"

A. No, but it will be rebuilt after rebooting your PC.

Nothing bad will happen because the system won't allow the
hiberfil.sys file to be deleted while hibernation is turned on and XP
is active.

If you try you will find that you can't delete it from within Windows.
You could from outside, probably for example by booting to Safe Mode
command prompt - I think you would then find that the Hibernate setting
was turned off.

If you do want to be rid of it most of the time, turn off hibernation.
It only takes a moment to start it up again
